Buying a tennis stringing machine actually turned out to make me money! Not cost me money.
I first decided I wanted to buy a stringing machine when I read an article on reddit about a guy who started stringing for people at his local club. He was just a 3.0 player, so not even that great. But just because you aren't a good tennis player doesn't mean you can't and shouldn't learn how to string racquets. It's a great way to learn more about how you're equipment works but more importantly...
You can make some money!
I first started turning a profit just by stringing my own tennis racquets. Before I bought my tennis stringing machine, I was paying someone $50 to string my racquet. Talk about a rip off! It really only takes about 1 hour (even for me and I'm a beginner) and that is just not worth it.
But when the money really started to flow in is when I started stringing for my friends. I play doubles every Wednesday with some guys in town and essentially, I started asking all of them if I could string their racquets. It's an older groups, so they don't need a guy with a stringing machine all that often. BUT, there are 12 of them so even just one racquet a month if they each need a restringing once a year. Not to mention, I hustle a bit and tell they should restring every six months. Which I truly think is good advice.
Things were looking great at this point. And most importantly, I was starting to get much better at stringing. As time goes on, you become both more consistent, but also faster. And this is where the hourly rate of stringing can really increase. Some professionals can string a racquet in as few as 12 minutes! Talk about impressive.
As my doubles group got to know me as "the stringer" better they started to sell their friends as well. And now, even though I'm just a 3.0 player, I become known at the club. If I really wanted to, I think I could quit my job and just string racquets full time! But that's not what I'm after, so I'll just stick with the day job and keep the tennis side hustle going!
I ended up using all that cash to buy a new pair of shades that I truly think are the best tennis sunglasses out there.
